Success, Failure, Redemption and Rebuilding
An honest account of the journey that shaped ThinkIP and the philosophy behind it.
Most professional biographies tell a story of success. Mine tells a story of success, failure, redemption, and rebuilding.
I was born in Mauritius and migrated to Australia as a young teenager. Like many migrants, I arrived with little more than hope, ambition, and a belief that hard work could create opportunities that previous generations could only dream about.
Over the following decades I built a successful career in business consulting and entrepreneurship. I established and operated a national consulting firm that employed more than 100 professionals and advised organisations ranging from growing SMEs to some of Australia's most recognised brands.
By the turn of the century, I found myself involved in what appeared to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Through a joint venture with one of Australia's major banks, I was helping develop a world-first "On-line Non-Mortgaged Back Lending Portal for Franchisees" that was projected to create substantial long-term value. At its peak, the opportunity had been independently valued at around $150 million.
Life seemed full of possibility.
Then everything changed.
The events of September 11, 2001 sent shockwaves through global credit markets and businesses worldwide. Like many commercial ventures of that era, our project was severely impacted. The opportunity ultimately collapsed, creating significant financial pressure and uncertainty.
What followed was a period of poor judgement and decisions for which I take full responsibility.
I broke the law.
The consequences were severe and deservedly so. I lost my business, my reputation, my financial security, and ultimately my freedom. I served a lengthy custodial sentence and paid a heavy personal price.
Those years were undoubtedly the darkest chapter of my life.
Yet they also became the foundation for my transformation.
During my time in custody, I faced a choice. I could allow my mistakes to define me forever, or I could use the experience to become a better man. I chose the latter.
I became a carer for inmates with mental disabilities and special needs. What began as a responsibility gradually became a calling. The experience taught me patience, compassion, humility, and accountability. More importantly, it forced me to confront myself honestly and accept responsibility for my actions.
During that period I also rediscovered my Christian faith.
Faith gave me perspective when everything else had been stripped away. It taught me that while mistakes have consequences, they do not have to determine the remainder of a person's life. It taught me that character is forged through adversity and that true success is measured by contribution rather than status.
Following my release, I committed myself to rebuilding my life from the ground up.
I returned to study and eventually completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) specialising in Intellectual Property Valuation and Franchise Systems. My doctoral research was seminal and my thesis was ground-breaking according to the examiners. I explored the relationship between intellectual property, business value, and commercial performance, a field that remains central to my work today.
Since completing my doctorate, I have lectured at university level, advised businesses across Australia, authored books, developed educational programs, and worked with hundreds of business owners seeking to build more valuable, resilient, and sustainable enterprises.
Along the way, I learned a lesson that has become the foundation of my professional philosophy.
Businesses rise and fall. Markets change. Economic shocks occur. People make mistakes. But the organisations that survive and thrive are those that understand, develop, protect, and leverage their intellectual property assets.
That belief ultimately led to the creation of ThinkIP.
ThinkIP was founded on a simple idea: every business possesses valuable intellectual property assets, whether they realise it or not. Brands, systems, processes, databases, customer relationships, know-how, and goodwill are often the hidden drivers of business value. Yet many business owners never identify, protect, value, or commercialise these assets effectively.
My mission today is to help change that.
I work with founders, business owners, advisors, franchise groups, and organisations to identify hidden value, improve performance, increase business valuation, and create sustainable pathways for growth.
I do not claim to be perfect. I have experienced both success and failure. I have built businesses and lost them. I have made mistakes and paid dearly for them. I have experienced public scrutiny, personal hardship, and professional reinvention.
These experiences have given me a perspective that cannot be learned from textbooks alone.
If there is one lesson my journey has taught me, it is this:
"Your greatest setback does not have to become your final chapter."
Every day presents an opportunity to learn, rebuild, contribute, and create value.
I am Dr M.
